UK Power Networks, the company which delivers power across London, the East of England and the South East, was named Utility of the Year in a double win at a glittering event last night (December 10).

The company beat strong competition to win both the prestigious Utility of the Year title and Team of the Year, at the Utility Industry Achievement Awards. The two awards are all the more special because they come only two years after the company was formed in 2010.

UK Power Networks was a triple finalist at the awards, having been shortlisted for the Environment category in recognition of its unique partnership with wildlife trusts as well.

In the past year UK Power Networks has dramatically improved the reliability of power supplies, customer satisfaction, staff engagement and development, and achieved a strong financial performance. In addition, a standout achievement this year was the delivery, on time and on budget, of the Olympic Park’s new state-of-the-art electrical network and keeping the power running for Games venues and London transport hubs.

Judges said they were impressed as much by UK Power Networks’: “improved performance across the board as by the immense effort marshalled to build and operate the power network needed for the Olympic Park.” They said the company won the Utility of the Year award because: “both sides of the company’s aims were achieved simultaneously and neither challenge had detracted from performance elsewhere.”

UK Power Networks’ Olympic delivery team also secured the Team of the Year award after judges said: “the scale of the project was incredible and the results were impressive.”

Chief Executive Basil Scarsella said: “It is so rewarding for our 5000 employees and 2000 contractors to see that the high standards which they have strived for and achieved, are being recognised by independent industry experts.

“Everything we do is designed to keep the lights on for the 20 million people that rely on UK Power Networks and usually that work goes without a mention. However this is a time for our staff to feel proud of UK Power Networks and their achievement in delivering outstanding performance.”

Notes to editors:

UK Power Networks distributes power to a third of Britain’s population through its electricity networks serving London, the South East and the East of England. The company's 5,000 employees are dedicated to delivering a safe, secure electricity supply to about eight million homes and businesses via its networks of substations, overhead lines and underground cables.

UK Power Networks distributed the electricity at many venues for this summer’s international sporting events. This year we are investing £360million in our electricity networks and around £1.8billion in the five years to 2015. We are also undertaking trials to ensure our electricity networks support the transition to a low carbon future.

Customers pay their bills to supply companies but UK Power Networks delivers the power across our three areas. The industry regulator Ofgem sets an allowed revenue to distribution companies so that they can maintain safe and reliable electricity supplies. If customers are unfortunate enough to be affected by a power cut or have another issue with the electricity supply to their property, they should contact UK Power
