CageCapture Detection and Capture

CageCapture Detection and Capture projects will develop a coating to detect Sulphur Hexafluoride SF6 leaks from equipment containing SF6 as an insulation medium. The capture project will develop a material that traps the gas molecules, preventing them from being released into the atmosphere. These two projects will help UK Power Networks reduce the level of emissions to less than 0.15% of total volume.

SF6 is a man-made gas used as an insulation medium in electrical equipment. Unfortunately, it has a global warming potential of 23,900 times that of CO2, which means all leaks must be treated as a priority.

CageCapture Detection and Capture projects are a collaboration between CageCapture Ltd, Scottish and Southern Energy Networks, Northern Powergrid, UK Power Networks and the EIC. CageCapture Ltd. develop advanced, customisable nanomaterials for molecular filtration and separation to solve pressing problems related to air quality, greenhouse gas capture, and clean energy.

CageCapture Ltd. will develop a coating to detect Sulphur Hexafluoride SF6 leaks from equipment containing SF6 as an insulation medium. Once the coating has completed compatibility tests to safeguard against adverse effects, it will then be applied to equipment that is losing gas pressure. The coating, when first applied, fluoresces under ultra-violet light. The coating ceases to fluoresce at locations where leaks are present. CageCapture Ltd. will also develop a material that will trap the SF6 gas molecules preventing them from being released into the atmosphere. When the material eventually becomes saturated with SF6 molecules, it will be recovered and returned to CageCapture, who will extract the SF6 and reinitialise the capture material.

CageCapture Ltd has developed a nano-porous technology that exhibits the highest reported SF6 selectivity at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, which is critical to tackling emissions in the environment as they occur. The patented material, named CageCaptureā„¢ SF6, has a remarkable absorption capacity which is better than traditional absorbents. The unique properties of the material make it suitable for humid environments.

This project is about to start. We will be able to report on the success of this technology once we have started the trials.
